Developed by Bonnie Prudden in 1976, Myotherapy is a method of relaxing muscle spasm, improving circulation and alleviating pain. It works by defusing "trigger points", which are intense knots of muscle tension that often refer pain to other areas of the body. When a trigger point is under excess emotional or physical stress it often responds by throwing a muscle into spasm. Spasm, in turn, causes pain. In 2008 to expand my understanding of Eastern Medicine, I began a year at a very busy, all Chinese acupuncture clinic, with 15 examination rooms. I decided I needed to invest a year and fill in the blanks of my understanding of biomechanics, posture and recovery from pain, sports massage. In 2009 he enrolled in the De Anza Massage Therapy Program. The rigorous 500 hour certification program, provided me an amazing learning experience. Stressing the functional synergistic balance between muscle groups in relation to each other, and the importance of spotting body imbalances by postural analysis. I was most influenced by the medical evidence in Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy. It answered so many questions I had about the internal nature of referred pain that affects the rest of the body.
